How is monitoring conducted in the operating room?
Release time:2015-05-23
The operating room is a high-speed, high-volume department that uses a wide variety of surgical instruments and supplies every day. If these instruments and supplies are not properly managed, they can lead to healthcare-associated infections, thereby compromising the safety and outcomes of surgical patients. Given the critical importance of surgical supplies, how does the operating room ensure their proper use and management? And how is the effectiveness of these supplies monitored? Let me take you on a journey to explore these questions together!
Operating room monitoring includes physical, chemical, and biological monitoring.
I. Physical Monitoring of the Process
Namely, monitoring surgical instruments. High-pressure steam The required temperature, pressure, and time.
III. Biological Monitoring of the Process
The entire load is assessed for compliance by using a standardized microbial strain—Bacillus stearothermophilus spores. Biological monitoring is a direct-verification method that provides critical evidence of sterilization efficacy and serves as an essential indicator of performance. It simulates the actual inactivation process, with a level of difficulty that exceeds that of the actual load; by integrating multiple parameters, it can detect even minor failures and enable the derivation and calculation of a sterility assurance level of 10⁻⁶. Consequently, biological monitoring is regarded as the gold standard for risk control.
After passing physical and chemical monitoring, biological monitoring shall be conducted continuously under no-load conditions for three consecutive cycles; the equipment may only be used if the results are compliant, and the monitoring methods shall comply with the relevant requirements of GB 18278. For small steam sterilizers, biological monitoring shall be conducted continuously under full-load conditions for three consecutive cycles; the equipment may only be used if the results are compliant. Pre-vacuum (including pulsatile vacuum) steam sterilizers shall undergo BD testing, which shall be repeated three times, and only after consecutive satisfactory results are obtained may the equipment be used. Any positive spore indicators are considered to indicate a malfunction of the sterilizer; all reusable items processed by such a sterilizer between the last negative result and the subsequent satisfactory biological monitoring result are deemed non-sterile and shall be recalled and reprocessed where feasible.
With these rigorous quality controls in place, we can be confident that all surgical instruments used on patients are sterile, ensuring the success of their surgeries!
