How Should Food Companies Choose Hand Sanitizers?

    Release time:2015-08-27

The hands of food-handling personnel are highly susceptible to contamination by pathogenic microorganisms. Some establishments disinfect hands by immersing them in peroxide-based or chlorine-containing disinfectants; ideally, such immersion should last for at least three minutes to achieve the desired efficacy. However, during peak work hours when staff are concentrated, they often share a single basin of disinfectant solution and merely briefly dip their hands, resulting in inadequate disinfection time and repeated use by multiple individuals. This leads to a decline in the disinfectant’s concentration, turning it into a source of contamination instead. Furthermore, the use of shared towels to dry hands after washing exacerbates the problem. Improper hand-disinfection practices not only lead to secondary contamination of food but also contaminate containers, utensils, and work surfaces, which in turn can result in cross-contamination of food products and ultimately render them non-compliant.

Domestic food-processing enterprises are vigorously implementing GMP, SSOP, HACCP, and QS programs. Installing an automatic sensor-activated hand-disinfection station at each critical workstation requiring hand disinfection not only ensures compliance with regulatory standards but also significantly reduces the consumption of disinfectant, enhances operational efficiency, prevents secondary contamination before and after disinfection, and rapidly eliminates surface bacteria on the hands. Based on the duration of post-disinfection bactericidal efficacy, it is recommended to re-disinfect hands every 60 to 90 minutes to effectively inhibit the growth and proliferation of handborne microorganisms.

Therefore, when enterprises implement “automatic handwashing and automatic disinfection” hygiene and sanitation procedures, selecting the appropriate hand sanitizer dispenser becomes a top priority. According to Zhou Lifa, General Manager of Shanghai Kangjiu Environmental Protection Technology Co., Ltd.:

    1. Fully consider your own circumstances and needs.

Such as the number of employees, the number of access passages to the workshop, financial affordability, and the procurement of seats that can be used both as seating and hanging fixtures. Hand sanitizer . Determine which disinfectant to use in the plan: if 75% medical alcohol is used as the disinfecting agent, the procedure is “sensor-activated soap dispenser for handwashing—faucet rinsing—sensor-activated hand drying—sensor-activated hand disinfection”; if another disinfectant solution is used, the procedure is “sensor-activated soap dispenser for handwashing—faucet rinsing—sensor-activated hand disinfection—sensor-activated hand drying.” It is recommended to choose one of these methods, as alcohol leaves no residue on the hands after it evaporates.

    2. Comparison of Single-Function and Multi-Function

Currently, hand disinfection devices on the market come in two main types: multifunctional units that combine disinfectant spraying with hand-drying functions, and single-function units that provide only disinfectant spraying. On the surface, the former integrates multiple functions into a single device, which can reduce equipment costs and create a more compact operating environment. However, housing the heating element of a hand dryer alongside flammable disinfectant within the same enclosure significantly increases the risk of fire. Moreover, the compact design can lead to interference among components during operation, raising the likelihood of malfunctions and operational errors, thereby reducing human–machine ergonomics, shortening product lifespan, and increasing maintenance costs. In contrast, although single-function devices are more expensive to manufacture, they ensure safer production practices, enhance operational efficiency, and lower maintenance expenses.

    3. Comparative Selection of Hand Sanitizer Manufacturers

Determine whether the other party is a manufacturer and R&D company specializing in hand sanitizers or a trading company that primarily engages in agency sales. Thoroughly assess the manufacturer’s R&D capabilities, product quality, technological sophistication, number of experts, and commitment to quality. When feasible, solicit feedback from other users in the same industry who are currently using hand sanitizers to learn their evaluations of various brands. Alternatively, arrange a site visit to the company—ideally under a “use first, pay later” arrangement—to allow the company to demonstrate its quality and capabilities firsthand.

    4. Understanding the selection of the “pump,” a key component of hand disinfectors

The pump is a critical component of hand sanitizers; the quality of the spray and the service life are directly determined by the type of pump selected. Currently, most hand sanitizers on the market use one of two types: air pumps or wash pumps. Air pumps are high-power, corrosion-resistant units capable of continuous operation for up to 50 hours, with a design life of 500 hours. They are recommended for workplaces with more than 10 users. Wash pumps, on the other hand, are compact units designed to operate in cycles of 5 seconds on and 25 seconds off, with a rated duty cycle of 25,000 operations. However, since each wash pump can only run continuously for 5 seconds at a time, prolonged operation beyond this limit results in a high failure rate, making them more suitable for workplaces with 10 or fewer users.

    5. Understand the protective technology of hand sanitizer dispensers.

Even the best pump cannot operate dry; it is essential to confirm whether the pump is equipped with protective features, such as an audible alarm that activates when the disinfectant solution is overfilled, a flashing warning light that signals low disinfectant levels, an automatic shut-off function when the remaining disinfectant drops to 50 mL, and voltage-stabilization protection to safeguard against fluctuations in current and voltage.

    6. Overall Performance Comparison of Hand Sanitizers

Does the hand sanitizer dispenser feature a stainless-steel housing, given that all disinfectants can cause some degree of oxidation or corrosion on surfaces? Is the nozzle a stainless-steel, spring-loaded, three-stage spray nozzle that can be easily replaced or removed for backflushing when clogged? Does the spray pattern produce a fine mist with tiny droplets that can disperse evenly? Is there a built-in drain screw at the base of the dispenser to facilitate switching between different disinfectant solutions and to allow easy cleaning of the reservoir? Does it come with a built-in collection tray equipped with an internal sponge absorbent pad to prevent disinfectant from spilling onto the floor?

    7. Requirements for the types of disinfectants.

Choosing a hand sanitizer dispenser that is compatible with any brand of disinfectant eliminates the hassle of being locked into a specific dispenser–disinfectant combination. Users can select the disinfectant that best meets their organization’s disinfection requirements without any restrictions. At the same time, this flexibility does not exceed the service and support conditions set by the supplier, nor will it affect future after-sales service.

    8. Requirements for after-sales service.

Users must carefully review the specific after-sales service commitments made by each manufacturer and, whenever possible, avoid selecting companies that impose restrictions on after-sales service for their products or provide no after-sales service at all, as such arrangements could disrupt the normal operation of the user’s production processes.
