New Applications of Dry Heat

Dry heat instrument In the past, oil-based items such as vaseline-impregnated gauze and paraffin-soaked cotton balls were commonly used; however, these days such single-use sterile items are supplied pre-packaged by manufacturers, rendering dry-heat sterilizers largely idle. In October 2010, in accordance with the requirements of the Hospital Infection Control Department, centralized management was implemented for ventilator tubing used in clinical departments. At that time, due to the lack of a dedicated drying cabinet, we leveraged the operating principle of the dry-heat sterilizer to trial its use for drying ventilator tubing. The results not only met our expectations in terms of drying efficacy but also ensured that the equipment remained undamaged and in good condition. Following more than two years of continuous monitoring, this approach has proven to be both practical and effective for drying ventilator tubing. The specific procedure is described below.

1 Method

Place the cleaned and disinfected ventilator tubing in the dry-heat sterilizer, with the openings of components such as the water collection cup and humidification chamber facing downward, and coil the threaded tubing. Then set the temperature and duration for Program 1 (for medical devices) to 50°C and 40 minutes, respectively, start the cycle, and after one cycle has completed, inspect the dryness of the ventilator tubing. If drying is not thorough, repeat the cycle using the same procedure.
