How long is the service life of a UV disinfection unit?
Release time:2018-04-17
As a professional in the ultraviolet field, I would like to first refute the irresponsible response given by the user above: the more an UV lamp can operate continuously with fewer on–off cycles, the longer its service life. Contrary to what the user claimed, starting the lamp only when it is in use—without any preheating—is actually very detrimental to its longevity. This is because a UV lamp is a gas-discharge lamp; each start-up subjects the filament to a severe electrical surge, which causes sputtering of the electron-emitting coating on the filament. The loss of this coating occurs even before the filament itself is damaged. Even if the lamp has a preheating function, it is still best to minimize the number of starts as much as possible.
It is not appropriate to specify the service life of a UV lamp in terms of a fixed number of hours, because judging its lifespan solely on whether the lamp still lights up is incorrect. UV disinfection units are designed for microbial inactivation, which relies primarily on UVC short-wave ultraviolet radiation (200–280 nm). Each type of microorganism requires a specific cumulative UV dose to be inactivated. Therefore, the disinfection efficacy depends on the UV dose, which is calculated as intensity multiplied by exposure time. In most cases, UV lamps are replaced not because they fail to light up, but because their intensity drops below the required level.
Currently, no unified standard has been established for UV lamps. Generally speaking, low-pressure mercury lamps are used in household and small-scale sterilizers. On the market, the commonly accepted definition of lamp life is the operating time until the lamp output declines by 20%, typically ranging from 8,000 to 9,000 hours. For applications requiring longer service life, lamps with long-life coatings are available, which can often reach 12,000 or even 16,000 hours—but at a higher price.
