　　Ultraviolet light refers to electromagnetic radiation with wavelengths shorter than those of visible light, ranging from 200 nm to 400 nm—a portion of the spectrum that is invisible to the naked human eye. It can be further subdivided into the UV-C band (200 nm–280 nm), the UV-B band (280 nm–320 nm), and the UV-A band (320 nm–380 nm).

　　It possesses strong efficacy, based on the principle that ultraviolet C (UVC) radiation can cleave the DNA bonds of viruses and other pathogens, thereby disabling their ability to replicate. The peak of its effectiveness occurs at a wavelength of 265 nm, which closely matches the spectral peak emitted by low-pressure UV lamps. Consequently, low-pressure mercury lamps are frequently used in applications that require surface disinfection.

　　Lamps in this wavelength range are currently mainly used for aging and yellowing tests on material surfaces as well as for promoting the growth of plants and animals; medium-pressure mercury lamps or low-pressure mercury lamps with special phosphors can serve as the light source. In addition, narrow-band UVB can be applied in the treatment of skin diseases, such as vitiligo.
